COLD GALVANIZING REPAIR COMPOUNDS
MATERIAL SPECIFICATION REFERENCE: No reference, may be used only for spot repair (touch up)
of damaged galvanized items subject to approval of the Engineer. PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS: Qualified Product Evaluation Form Submit a standard Qualified Product Evaluation Form to the
DOTD Materials and Testing Section Coordinator listed below, along with a letter
requesting evaluation for the Qualified Products List. Product Data Sheets Include product data sheets to provide all pertinent information relative to the product to be evaluated, including, but not limited to, manufacturer's specifications, recommended application procedure and rate, and typical analysis and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Sample (to be furnished at no cost to the Department) Qualification samples for this material shall be furnished
in pressurized spray cans, approximately 67 mm (2 5/8 in.) diameter by 150 mm (6 in.) high
or in 1 L (1 qt) friction top cans. The cans shall be completely labeled showing the
manufacturer, brand name and/or product name, product number and batch number. In
addition, the label shall show analysis of the contents including a breakdown of such
items as percent pigment and vehicle, percent non-volatile, percent zinc of the pigment or
non-volatile, percent and type of propellant, if applicable, plus any other technical
information to identify the composition of the cold galvanizing. TEST REQUIREMENTS: Laboratory Testing Three test panels approximately 100 by 200 by 3.3 mm(4 by 8 by 0.13 in.), made from A-36 steel shall be sandblasted to an SSPC-10 near white blast and 75-125 m (3-5 mils) DFT of cold galvanizing compound shall be applied. The cold galvanizing compound shall exhibit adequate protection against blistering, cracking, flaking, peeling or undercutting after 1500 hours exposure in a salt fog apparatus in accordance with ASTM B117. Evaluation Time Laboratory testing - 4 months GENERAL: Upon completion of the evaluation, the submitter will be
notified in writing concerning the results of the evaluation and whether the product will
or will not be added to the Qualified Products List. The Department reserves the right to
reevaluate any product at any time. PROJECT ACCEPTANCE REQUIREMENTS: Qualification of a product is not blanket approval for its
use. Cold galvanizing repair compound on the list may be used without sampling and
pretesting provided it is properly identified as being the specific product on the list.
However, sampling and testing before use may be required whenever a product is
questionable for any reason. Any deviation in performance from the product originally
approved may result in removal of the product from the qualified list. DISQUALIFICATION: Any product may be removed from the Qualified Products List
should the product fail to comply with specifications or performance requirements. The
Department must be notified in writing of any change in product formulation. Significant
changes may require reevaluation of the product. REQUALIFICATION: A product which has been disqualified and removed from the
Qualified Products List will be considered for reevaluation only after submission of a
formal request along with acceptable evidence that the problems causing the
disqualification have been resolved. DOTD MATERIALS AND TESTING SECTION COORDINATOR Kulwant Singh, P.E. Approved 04-01-98 |
