Profile of System

The Lafourche Council on Aging transportation program began operation in 1977. Three private vehicles owned by employees were used to transport senior citizens to and from local medical appointments, food stamp appointments, and grocery shopping.

During the first year of operation the system’s ridership grew steadily creating the need for more transportation. Five vans were purchased through the Lafourche Community Action Agency which enabled the provision of transportation service to more destinations including dialysis, appointments in New Orleans and other out of town locations. One of the vehicles was lift-equipped which provided the means by which service could be offered to the 35% of passengers who were disabled. With the purchase of these vans the employees no longer had to use their private vehicles for transportation.

The Section 18 Rural Transportation Program opened the doors of the Lafourche system to the general public under the sponsorship of the Lafourche Parish Council.
