BATON ROUGE, La. – The Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced today that the 35-car Plaquemine ferry will be out of service until the end of the month. 

The 17-car White Castle ferry has been moved to Plaquemine. This ferry will run service in Plaquemine but will restrict boat trailers because of its smaller size. The 35-car ferry will be returned to service after a broken propeller is replaced and stabilizer tests are completed.

The Plaquemine ferry continues to run one hour earlier each day, from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m., to help provide passage for drivers that would normally use the White Castle ferry. The White Castle ferry closed Dec. 18 because of a shortage of licensed marine engineers needed to operate the ferry. DOTD is still trying to fill vacant positions for the White Castle ferry, said Vince Latino, DOTD Engineer for Fleet and Movable Bridge Maintenance.
