CAMERON, La. – The Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced today that the Cameron ferry, which crosses the Calcasieu ship channel at La. 27 and La. 82, is disabled because of a detached rudder. The ferry is scheduled for repairs tomorrow morning.
This morning, the pin that holds the rudder in place sheared and caused the rudder to come loose from the ferry. Workers are in the process of retrieving the rudder from the channel. The rudder will be inspected to see if it can be reattached.
In the event that it cannot be reattached, a replacement rudder has been ordered from the Plaquemine ferry and will arrive tomorrow morning.
The ferry is expected to be back in service by middle to late afternoon Saturday.
The Cameron ferry operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
