NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that the Algiers Point and Canal Street ferry route will remain out of service until further notice following an electrical and mechanical evaluation of the ferry servicing Lower Algiers to Chalmette.
Service between Algiers Point and Canal Street was suspended yesterday when the Motor Vessel St. John experienced a mechanical failure caused by the steering system. Consequently, DOTD was forced to move the M/V Levy from Algiers to Chalmette. DOTD has contacted a vendor to send a technician for further evaluation of the M/V St. John, the ferry servicing the Chalmette area.
Currently, there are no other boats available for service and the estimated time of service resuming at Algiers Point is unknown. DOTD is working diligently to determine the required repair.
DOTD apologizes for any inconvenience this interruption in service may cause. Pedestrians may use the RTA Bus Service as an alternate travel mode to the east bank. RTA bus routes and schedules can be found at www.norta.com or by calling 504-248-3900.
Travelers are encouraged to sign up to follow the latest status of the ferries on Twitter.com at Canal_Ferry and/or Chalmette_Ferry.
